  • Tom Cruise remains committed, with director Joseph Kosinksi having a solid story idea that has earned Cruise’s approval.
  • Top Gun star Glen Powell anticipates the next chapter, expressing comfort and excitement for the familial set environment.

Top Gun 3, much discussed but still firmly on the drawing board, shows signs of life according to recent comments from Jerry Bruckheimer, the powerhouse producer behind the scenes.

During the promotion of his latest project, Daisy Ridley’s Young Woman and the Sea, Bruckheimer also shed light on the future of the Top Gun series. Despite the eagerness of fans for another sequel, Bruckheimer tempered expectations with a candid remark. The producer said:

We had preliminary stuff. We’re not there yet. [There’s] ways to go.

Per GamesRadar, Bruckheimer admitted that while the project is in motion, it remains in the early stages of development. This update comes after initial buzz earlier in the year hinted at the return of Tom Cruise, alongside Top Gun: Maverick co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell. However, specifics on the plot and a definitive timeline for production remain under wraps.

Recently, Bruckheimer also revealed that Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has solid idea for the sequel, one that has received a thumbs up from Tom Cruise. This early endorsement by Cruise, who remains the franchise’s steadfast protagonist, suggests that the next chapter could indeed be something special. The legendary producer excitedly disclosed:

“It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it.”

Fans may need to temper their excitement with a bit of patience. Cruise’s schedule is tightly packed, as he continues to globe-trot for the Mission: Impossible series, with the eighth installment currently in production followed by another project. The timing of Top Gun 3 hinges heavily on his availability.

“But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.”

Will Tom Cruise return for a Top Gun 3 anytime soon? Here are all the details on a possible sequel to Top Gun: Maverick.

Top Gun: Maverick Star Glen Powell Talks Returning Roles

Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell shared that he is growing comfortable with his role and the unique camaraderie among the cast. The actor portrayed Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin in the hit action sequel, which has set the stage for his return in the upcoming Top Gun 3.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Powell reflects on his evolution since joining the Top Gun franchise. His initial venture into the action-packed world of naval aviation was a dazzling experience, one that he describes as entering a “new shiny world.”

“I will say that when we made Top Gun Maverick, that was a new shiny world for me. And now I feel that it’s still filled with brilliance. It’s still shiny to me, but it’s also a group of people I call my family. So, I can go into this movie in a different way. Maybe just the fact that it feels a little bit more lived in and a little more comfortable for all of us will be really wonderful.”

To make a good movie where armed forces are part of the plot, it’s best to seek the advice of those who know that kind of life best.

Describing the set of Top Gun as familial, Powell expresses a newfound ease and anticipation for the next chapter, pointing out that the environment now feels “lived in” and even more welcoming.

“There are a lot of very smart brains on [Top Gun 3] that really do not need my brain involved at all. They’re going to put a wonderful story together. But I will say that after making Top Gun and making Devotion, you really feel a sense of community in this Navy. When I look at my texts in the morning, the fact that a lot of ’em are call signs is very cool, and the fact that I still call these pilots my friends is really wonderful.”
