Annu Kapoor addresses controversy surrounding Hamare Baarah; says, “I would urge people to watch the film first and then decide” : Bollywood News FSalinks

Annu Kapoor’s starrer Hamare Baarah has faced criticism for its bold content and themes, with some accused it of spreading hate against a specific religious community under the guise of highlighting women’s sufferings. This controversy has led to severe backlash, including death threats against the actors and rape threats directed at the female cast members. Kapoor recently posted a video on social media requesting police protection due to these escalating threats.

Additionally, in an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, the actor discussed the issue surrounding Hamare Baarah, saying, “At a personal and an impersonal level, I’m an atheist. My director and producers thought that I was the right person who would be able to implement their vision on celluloid. So, I tried my best to justify my character. I’m not bothered about the rest. Films are a make-believe world where I’m chosen as an artist and my job is to justify my art.”

Kapoor adds that his motivation for doing Hamare Baarah derived from the fact that he was well compensated, which he believes in all that matters at the end of the day. “I’m not a religious man. I’ve got nothing to do with religion and politics. I did this film because they paid me well. Paisa diya, issi liye kara. I work for money. Par khada paise ke liye main na kabhi kisi ka jeb kaatunga, na chori karunga, na gala ghotunga aur na apne desh ko bhechunga,” he stated.

He believes that the detractors are too quick to make judgements on the film even before watching it. “People talk about propaganda all the time. I’m not bothered about it. I would urge people to watch the film first and then decide what our film stands for. They haven’t watched it, so I don’t understand why they’re judging it,” he questioned.

Recently, Ajit Pawar’s NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) urged that the film not to be released in Maharashtra. On the other hand, the Muslim religious organization Raza Academy denounced the video and urged that the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) immediately reject it because it portrays Muslims as oppressive.

Kapoor responded, saying, “The censor board is a competent body that has approved our film. We should give them so much authority that when they pass a film, it should go uncontested. Film is an audiovisual media. Whoever wishes to speak out against our film should do so using words rather than insult or violence. If they bring a gun, we will likewise bring one. The fact that individuals are abusing our video indicates that they have already lost and we have triumphed.”

The CBFC has granted Hamare Baarah a U/A certification. They also requested that the makers make 11 adjustments, beginning with the film’s title. It was previously named Hum Do Hamare Baarah. The film Hamare Baarah will be released on June 7.
